The Brooklyn Pirate Radio Sound Map (BPRSM) traces the lingering connections between unlicensed radio broadcasting and Brooklyn's local neighborhood culture in the digital age. This ongoing archival audio project explores the conditions that allow stations to operate openly and illegally, the needs of their audiences and their effect on licensed stations. Audio samples are drawn from recordings made from 2014 to the present. For user instructions click the question mark on the map page.
Note: All information presented on the BPRSM site is drawn only from public sources, intensive radio listening, and on the record interviews. The active pirate zones on the map show only the neighborhood that the station serves, based on information given in the station's programming. Transmitter locations are not known or implied.
The Sound Map is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
Additional support comes from: Matt Blaze, Ralph Brandi, Jamie Courville, Charles E. Dennis, Bill Fastenau, Dylan Flesch, Charles Hutchinson, Larisa Mann, Maria Margaronis, Charlie Morgan, and Thomas Witherspoon.
